Description

Every year, Saratoga High Spanish students take the annual school trip to Mexico during February break. The usually they go to Cuernavaca in Southern Mexico. But this year, the teachers chose Merida- a coastal city on the Yucatan Peninsula. Along with the daily Spanish classes and time spent with Mexican host families, Saratoga High students explored historical and cultural aspects of the city, and it’s surroundings.

For many students, the trip provides a chance to be immersed in an authentic version of Mexican culture. Host families invite students to live with them- and the students enjoy all aspects of their way of life, from food to local attractions to everyday social interaction.

Every student who went on the Mexico trip was taken on a tour of Merida’s cultural and historical hotspots. Some of them included natural wonders, and ancient Mayan ruins, while others were community exhibitions of Mexican culture.

Learning to speak another language, like Spanish, requires immersion to some degree in the culture. The amazing exposure to both the history and daily life in a foreign country was both fun and educational according to the students. The cultural encounters experienced by the students who made the trip was unparalleled, opening the eyes of Saratoga High students to a wider world.
